PARISH NOTICES for the week beginning
12th/13th April 2025 - Palm Sunday, Year C

There are two parades of Holy Week:

·         First into Jerusalem from Bethany on the Sunday and Jesus being acclaimed as a political saviour.  People hoped he would triumph, that his followers would put him into power and all hoped he would get rid of the Romans.

·         The second, from Jerusalem outside the walls of the city on the following Friday, to Calvary; a man in disgrace.  A man carrying his cross, crowned with thorns, mocked and bullied and tortured. And about to be killed. Like the parade to a dishonoured graveside.

He had all sorts of followers – some like camp followers, some terrorists, some people on the make for themselves, or the ones who stayed till the end, like his mother, an aunt and a few of the followers. The others were at a distance, they would come back and would follow later to the end. We hope to be in that second parade. Palms are for waving in triumph, then they wither.  The cross is forever, for all time. The cross is his love, and as we follow in this parade, we show our willingness to console him in love to the end. This is a holy week because a man like us, and one of the Trinity, gave his life.

Look at a crucifix and say, ‘What will I do for Christ?’
Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free;
you are the Saviour of the world.

HOUSE BLESSING: House blessings (also known as house healings, house clearings, house cleansings and space clearing) are rites intended to protect the inhabitants of a house or apartment. It is also there asking God’s protection and blessing upon each member of the family. In Christianity, house blessing is an ancient tradition dating back to the early days, that is usually performed by a priest who sprinkles holy water and blessed salt as he walks through every room of the house, accompanied by the occupants of the house, whilst praying for the occupants. If you would like your home/apartment/room blessed, then please contact one of the priests and a time and date can be arranged. The blessing ritual takes about 20 minutes, and it is lovely if all occupants of the home are present.

ARE YOU NEW TO OUR PARISH? Thank you for your interest in our parish. Whether you're just visiting us for a brief time, looking for a new parish home, returning to the practice of your Catholic faith or are interested in finding out more about the Catholic Church, we are happy to answer your questions, listen to your comments and help you in any way that we can. We are a parish of the Diocese of Portsmouth, and are a very vibrant community, made up of ‘old’ Maidenhead families and relative “newcomers” from all walks of life. We hope that you find our Catholic parish a caring community that is loving, welcoming and supportive of all. Our mission is to grow in the image of Christ through the Holy Spirit, to be formed by the Word and our prayer, to use our gifts to welcome those who are here and reach out to those who are not. We invite you to join us as partners in the mission. Together, let us get to know Christ better and to make Him better known. May God Bless you wherever you are and thank you for exploring our website and newsletter. Please stop by the parish office to introduce yourself! We would love to meet you.

FIRST FRIDAY: The First Friday of the month is traditionally a time when a priest visits a home to anoint anyone who is house bound, with holy oil, and to administer the sacrament of Holy Communion. The parish has several people on this list. If indeed, you or someone you know would like a visit from a priest, then please contact Fr. Liam, Fr. Ephraim or Fr. Tom.

FIRST FRIDAY HEALING MASS These special Masses will take place on:

WHAT IS A HEALING MASS?

Healing Masses are opportunities to directly seek physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual healing. These Masses include a homily that is focused on healing, prayers of the faithful that are directly asking God to heal us, and prayers after communion that are prayed by the Priest to help facilitate greater healing in our lives.

The Mass is the most powerful way that we can seek healing as Christians. Jesus is present in the Mass through the Scriptures, through giving Himself to us in His Body and His Blood, and through our worship of Him. He is the one who heals us. The Mass helps to facilitate the healing that Jesus wants to give to all of us.

BAPTISMAL COURSE The Baptismal Course is available for all Parents whose child is being Baptised at either St Joseph’s, St Elizabeth’s or St Edmund Campion. The course is a 90 minute preparation and guidance. It is held at St Joseph’s the first Tuesday of the month at 7pm. The next meetings are:

LENTEN PENITENTIAL SERVICES FOR THE PASTORAL AREA:

As part of our spiritual preparation for Easter it is customary for all of us to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Our Lenten Season is a Journey, leading us through the Sacred Scriptures to understand who Jesus is and why he came into our world. As we enter into the most sacred week of the church liturgical year in a few weeks’ time (Holy Week), we have the opportunity to walk side by side with the Lord and receive this beautiful sacrament of God’s desire to be always united to us; he recognises our human frailty and weakness, and like the Father in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, he sees us “while we are a long way off”; he comes out to meet us and embraces us in his loving forgiveness!

The sacrament of Reconciliation will be celebrated at the following days at times in our Pastoral Area.

12th April at 11am, St. Joseph’s Maidenhead.

Wonderful opportunity to avail of this healing sacrament.

Holy Week: (Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday: 13th – 20th April 2025): Holy Week is a string of seven days that allow us an opportunity to reflect upon the shift in humanity Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross launched. It starts with Palm Sunday when Jesus enters the city of Jerusalem. The week leads us through the Last Supper, His crucifixion, and ends on Easter Sunday with His resurrection, and the beginning of the Easter Season. This is the basis of Christianity, His sacrifice launched the New Covenant God promised and many had prophesied throughout the Old Testament. Each day of Holy Week allows us to peek into the heart of our Saviour at intently close proximity. His love for us is reflected in every significant step toward the cross, every breath up to the last, and His resurrection. Please try and come to some of the powerful ceremonies/services that will be prayed throughout this week. You can pick up a timetable for all the ceremonies at the Church during this most holy of weeks. Also, are some web links to help explain more about this amazing week.

SWIECONKA: The blessing of the Easter food (meat, eggs and bread) at the end of Lent, or the "Swieconka", will take place at St. Joseph’s church on Saturday 19th April at 10am. This is very much a Polish tradition but is open to any member of our parish community who would like blessing upon their Easter food. Being grateful to God for all His gifts of both nature and grace, and, as a token of gratitude, people have the food of their table sanctified with the hope that spring, the season of the Resurrection, will also be blessed by God's goodness and mercy. All are welcome!

EASTER SERVICES: (Please see all services on separate sheet/posters):

13th APRIL 2025 3pm at St Joseph’s Church, Maidenhead Jubilee year is also known as a ‘Holy Year’. It happens every 25 years in the Church calendar. This jubilee year began on the 24th of December 2025 when the Pope opened a ‘Holy Door’ in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The Pope proclaimed the theme of the jubilee year ‘Pilgrims of Hope.’ The idea of Jubilee year goes back to the Old Testament times. It was a year when debts were cancelled, people made up their differences, making restitution for things stolen, making peace with God and neighbour. We are coming together as a parish on the to celebrate God’s goodness to us as we join in one great act of worship, scripture reading, singing, and socialising with each other. Our worship will involve the use of symbols and listening to each other, journeying together through prayer. Come, let us celebrate the Lord’s goodness to us.

Dear follower of Jesus,

We are about to venture into the most important week of the Christian life – Holy Week.

Let us spare this week for our GOD. Let us spend time for Reflection and Pray. Be thankful for all the blessings God bestowed upon us.  May we all have a meaningful HOLY WEEK.

Life feels good when somebody’s THERE.

It feels better when somebody SHARES.

It feels best when somebody CARES.

God bless you always & have a blessed Holy Week.

BISHOP’S CALL FOR FELLOWSHIP Bishop Philip Egan in his Pastoral Letter for Lent has encouraged Catholics to join organisations such as the Catenians. His sixth Holy Habit is to encourage us to join a small group for formation, prayer and fellowship. To quote Bishop Egan “ Christianity is not about me and God; it’s also about ‘we’ and God…. We are called to be in relationship with like-minded people and thus to live in communion with the Lord in mission…… I want therefore to encourage everyone … to belong to a Catholic .. organisation – whatever you fancy… It might be a network or an association, such as the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Catenians, …. a men’s group, a women’s group, a youth group.” The Catenians are a male Catholic group whose motto is Strengthening family life through friendship and faith. Catenians meet monthly for a meal, have an active social life with their wives and families and give support to their parishes and communities. Members are drawn from all walks of life and have a wide range of differing talents and experience.
