First Holy Communion Programme 2024/2025

Registration for this is taking place from now until mid-September. Parents are expected to ensure they, and their child attend Mass every weekend.

From January to May the child will attend eight sessions with experienced, volunteer catechists, who will prepare them for receiving holy communion for the first time. These classes are on Saturdays from 4:30pm-6:05pm and involve discussion, writing, drawing and colouring using the scheme ‘I Belong’. The children are brought to the church at the end of the class; many parents choose to attend 6:15pm Mass on these occasions because the priest often tailors the homily to FHC preparation.

Your child will receive the ‘I Belong’ book to work from and will need to bring their own stationery to the session. There will be homework after each session and it is the parents’ responsibility to ensure this is completed.

The sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is taken one Saturday in March, before 6:15pm Mass.

The FHC Masses are usually celebrated in the middle Saturdays in May, but this is dependent on the availability of Fr Liam. There are normally three Masses to choose from. There is no set outfit for the children to wear, although girls usually wear a white dress and boys a smart shirt and trousers or a suit.

In June we hold a final celebration. There is a Mass (usually at 10am) for all to attend and the children wear their Communion outfit. A photographer is in attendance to take a group photograph. There is the option for an individual photo to be taken of your child. Finally, there is a communion breakfast in the school hall. Finish time is around 12noon. Parents should be in attendance the whole time.
